Exercise # 2 / Creative writing

Who/what is your inner critic/tame your inner critic

Here is my first answer.

Surprise or not, this is the first time I learned the word, " inner critic" from the workshop.

I thought my inner critic would be my mother.  When I was little, my mother was the one who read my essays. When I went to the US, I created a blog written mostly in Vietnamese so I could write every day for my mother to read. When she passed away 12 years ago, I found myself writing less and less since no one would read it anymore. If I need to write, in my mind, I think about writing something for her to read as an old habit. Last night, I wrote a poem in Vietnamese, and I had a conversation with her. My inner critic gave me the freedom to write whatever I wanted with no filters. Right now, I am writing in English, and my inner critic has been asking me the question, " Will English readers understand what you mean? "

Here is my second answer.

This morning, during my morning meditation I had an epiphany. I found out who/or what my inner critic is.

This is not my mother like I shared my thought last night (1/24/2024) but the tiny little voice from my back kept saying, “Since you are writing to your mother, do not write it. Do not ever mention it.”

My inner critic is my 12-year-old self, invisible and hidden somewhere inside my head to keep all secrets and shame to herself. A little girl who was scared to death of losing her mother to leukemia. That inner critic was so insignificant and almost invisible that I did not notice.

Apparently, my inner critic never gives me the freedom to say whatever I want as I thought!

Today I realized that my inner critic was a 12-year-old girl who had grown so strong and powerful. This inner critic became a big thick-walled prison that was built with hate, secrets, shame, anxiety, insomnia, sadness, and guilt. The prison was built over time to keep a 53-year-old woman locked inside.   Whenever I want to unpack the deep side of the past, thinking about saying it in Vietnamese is impossible.

The voice in the back lately is getting louder and louder.

“Do not reveal it. Your mother passed in peace, let it be. She already suffered too much as a divorcee, as a single mother, and person who lived with leukemia for 20 years. She was strong enough to stay alive to bring you, your sister, and your brother up. Do not ever think about telling her things that absolutely hurt her again”. The louder voice says, “I warn you. You do not want to do it because you will hurt your brother and sister. You will destroy your sister and your relationship with your sister. You love them dearly. You must protect your siblings. You never say anything, why just keep silent.”

The concept of “inner critic” came from this workshop that helped me to identify my true inner critic.

It is not the voice that says, “Will English readers understand what you mean?”

It is not true when I say that I do not know how to start. Deep down I know that I have a whole volcano with boiling lava waiting to vent. The inner critic shut me down so quietly 40 years ago that I didn't even know.

My inner critic is sneaky. It masked my laughs, jokes, and anything that prevented me from telling the truth.

No wonder I behave the same. I quietly plan to write in English so my mother cannot read it!

Once I can hear clearly my inner voice say, “Don’t do it,”

I will separate myself from the voice of my inner critic in the back of my head. I know the more I write the louder my inner critic would be.

I was successful in identifying who/what it is, my inner critic.

Taming my inner critic will be difficult.

Exercise #1 /creative writing workshop

If your grief would speak, what would it say?

Grief would say to me, “Châu, I know that for the last three days, you have been crying so much. Someone from the writing group mentioned a tsunami of emotion. In your case, you have a tsunami, tornado, volcano, and earthquake of emotions, sadness, disappointment, and anxiety that all happened at the same time. You did not prepare for it mentally and physically. You cried and you could not sleep.”

“Châu, for the last 12 years of grieving your mother, you have been doing some good work to show the world that you are grieving. You cried, wrote, did art, meditated daily, analyzed dreams for healing, and so on. You believe that your wound is healing.  Today you realized that it is not healing but got infected.”

“Dreams do not help you to get healed. Dreams help you to get hints and clues that you have work to do. Dreams do not do grief work for you but show the way for you to go back to your grief house. You came back to the house every time in each dream, but you did not come in. You stood in front of the door, peeked inside the window and that was it. You are scared to knock on the door. You are scared to step inside. You are scared that you may step into the darkness and cannot find the way. You are scared to fall back into the deep hole.”

“Châu, after you set the intention on Monday for this workshop, you cried your eyes out and realized that this is the time you must knock on the door of grief and get in. You will emerge yourself into darkness. You will fall until you reach the bottom of the cave and be head-on to your infected wound.” Grief said,” I do not see any other way.”

“ You will have to talk to your 12-year-old inner child. That child was scared, anxious, and vulnerable. That child had head lice on her short and thick hair. She was too skinny with big eyes and a beautiful smile.  People rarely saw her cry or be sad. Like her mother, she loved to draw and read."

She saw her parents divorced. She was at ease seeing her father leave the house. She thought, "Now my parents would not fight and yell at each other anymore."

Less than two years after being divorced, her mother was sick with leukemia and was hospitalized on and off for the next 3-4 years. She wished that her mother was alive and back home to her, her brother, and her sister. She wished her childhood could have been a little bit more normal like other children in the building. She wished she could walk to school without worrying about what food she might have to prepare for the family that day.

She wished she did not have to walk across the street every day waiting in line to buy food because her mother was too sick to do so.  She would constantly be worried about her mother's condition worsening and being in the hospital again.  She had nightmares that she, her brother, and her little sister would be sent to live with the uncle's family again.

That little girl has kept a shameful secret for such a long time as she got sexually molested by a 15-year-old boy who came to her apartment at night to care for her and her siblings when her mother was in the hospital. She was so scared.  She would not sleep well at night for years.  She was so scared wondering why she had so much madness inside.

That little girl forced herself to be the second mother of the two little siblings full-time. She was forced to be an adult when it was not physically impossible to do so.

She told herself day and night that she must stay silent, she would never tell her siblings or her mother that she got molested by the person who was supposed to look after her at night.  She knew that her mother would be in so much pain and sad if she told her. She shut herself down for a long time.”

Châu, you have to face that 12-year-old inner child yourself. She has been waiting for 40 years in a dark and deep closet for you. Be gentle to her but get her out of that closet.

Có hai bàn máy may.

Cho con và cho Má.

Thấy Má ngồi may áo ấm cho con.

COVID Special project 2020-2023: Small drawings from sketch books

I should have posted these small drawings/sketches to my art blog but I forgot how to get in the blog.

yesterday I spent so much time selecting images from the last 3 years making art. I have been making so many things during COVID and did not post any.

During COVID, figure drawing Sunday club at UW shut down and I think it shut down for good. So sad to know. COVID then break.-in incidents/art commputers and material got stollen during weekend. So the art building in UW will not open for general public for now. Such a sad move.

I miss the Sunday drawing.

These are small drawings of Seattle streets or scene I went during covid.

I will call COVID special since I done things without any theme. Just making art to keep myself stay alive. Small drawings/hand made books and quiltings. I made a lot of big quits during this time. Will post soon.

Pilgrim, first hand-made book of 2024

I finished the book yesterday, the first day of 2024.

All the materials are recycled from books, newspapers, and posters that I collected mostly in 2023.

The name Pilgrim came up after the book was almost done.

From the beginning I knew that I wanted to make a book but not sure what would be about. Just having fun during the cold/wet/supper dark Seattle during the holiday.

The more I worked on it, the more it started to make sense. Very happy it turned out nice. The right start for a 2024.

Happy New Year to me / my art and to 2024 !
