MFA program recall.
Studio time would take up 75% of my my time. The rest of 25% would be spend for TAship, IAship and other required projects .
Like this one. Paper Hat Project , which I had done for Uncanny Event, 2007. Every art graduate had to join in to get credit . The event was held in a big lot of land, about 10 acres that UC art department borrowed from the one land lord who loves and support art.
Every students who participate must do something that related to art ( or not). I tried to find something that cost me nothing financially for this project . Then the idea of newspaper and making a hat workshop came up as a money saver for a broker like me .
Turn out. This was a hell of a fun .
I gathered newspapers from many sources. Sai Gon Giai Phong, LA Times, UC Davis Aggie, Business British Newspapper, New York Times ( some) and local ads.
Of course, it is free! the whole project costed me $10 for accessories.
and 5 hours to stay( all stand up ) to make hats for people in and out. So much fun.

First customer.

Banh Xeo got me this girl. She ran around and finally asked this girl . Do you want a hat. Yes. then come here. My mom will make you a hat. later Xeo tod me that she picked that girl because she had a wings like a fairy.

People loved to decorate their own hat. simple with yarn, discarded fabric and tape.

Banh Xeo was professionally showing people how to make a hat.

First male customer/

Actually, Sai Gon Giai Phong ran out first.People loved to have a hat using Comie newspapper.

Happy to be my model after she had her hat done.

a lot of beautiful fabric.

People started to gather, taught each other how to decorate a COOL hat .

It took her almost 30 minutes to make this dream hat. She tucked all the left over fabric inside , so all the paper part was hidden. Look like a real hat!

Happy .

One horn!

This man did not want a hat because he already got one. But the girl with him ask him. Please, you must do something . It is free. Ok, make me a tie then .

Turn out. Everybody was happy!

two horn hat.

I just helped people to make a hat. It is easy. Use about 4-5 sheets of new papers , cover the head, tape it tight , and shape the rim a little bit . Then here you are. You can decorate your own hat. Free!
