Red and Yellow Link ,2008
Installation of 100 canvases ( 12 by 9 each). Oil on canvas. Acrylic medium on gallery wall and column, 67 feet long.
The tittle is named by Nguyen, my husband. I could not think of the tittle until the last minute. ( Probably, the protest messed my brain up badly, cannot think sometimes, hehe).
The way the installation looked like right now is the way i responded to the space intuitively. Nothing is planed in advance. It took me couple days to get used to the assigned space before doing the install .
the design on the wall and column is measured to collaborate with the installation of 100 canvases. the measuring is based on my eye level for each angle . I made the design so whenever the audiences see the piece, they would see the the column is belonged to the piece itself, not something that gets on the way ( according to my perspective )
I had the floor waxed so the shiny reflection of the red and yellow structure becomes a part of the piece, too. also lighting is a very important element of this piece. In order of get rid of unnecessary spot light and the strong black shadow of the column, which cast onto the piece, I spend almost two days to learn how to install the light and use it just right. Up and down the ladder almost forever. proud of the lighting .
There is a red and yellow line that connects the piece to the wall and wraps up the corner of the wall, hope to give the audience the sense of the continuity of the piece reach out to somewhere, beyond this gallery space.
two different media are used for this installation: acrylic on the wall vs oil on canvas . Notice that all the canvases are made in Vietnam vs everything else is made in the U.S.
Close -up of the corner install.
My favorite part of the piece. The orange panel kinda suddenly drop down between two other reds. One artist said this image look like a " hiccup".
Please enjoy the pictures.
Next entry, i will tell people about the reviews: the meaning behind this piece, why the faculty do not like some parts of it, and how I defense myself to prove that what I have done is an absolute right thing to do.
and why did I cry during the last review ?
